USING MORE GOUT REMEDIES INCREASED HIS CHANCES OF SUCCESS has a page about pantothenic acid for gout and to date there are a couple of testimonials from gouty people who have used it and think it could have helped them. Experts recommending it include Dr.Robert Atkins of the Atkins diet.

Unlike Vitamins C and E, and fish oils, pantothenic acid (B5) is not exactly one of the best known vitamins. Few have heard of it. And even fewer know that it has been touted by experts as a remedy for gout since it is thought to dissolve uric acid and thus lower its blood level.

The other day I had a new testimonial for it. Someone whose gout returned after a 5 year absence (not unusual) took pantothenic acid along with folic acid (B9), cherry capsules, quercetin and B vitamins. B vitamins work better if taken together.

Our correspondent took the calcium pantothenate version of pantothenic acid. That is the version recommended by diet doctor Dr.Atkins, in his Dr.Atkins Vita Nutrient Solution book. His dose was 200-250 mg twice a day (breakfast and dinner: 100 – 125 mg each time). That's half the amount Dr. Atkins recommended but our correspondent reports success with this dose, but he used a different formula to the Atkins one. And it may have worked alone.

We can't conclude pantothenic acid alone helped his gout attacks. Because he also took folic acid which is also thought to lower uric acid. And because he also took quercetin for which there is now one study among humans which showed it lowered uric acid in that study by 8% in one month. Again our correspondent took the right type with bioflavonoids and rutin. Rutin too has lowered uric acid in a rats study.

And he took another gout nutrient – our old friend cherry capsules - twice a day. One, some, or all of these could have helped him. And there was more.

He took more B vitamins – B6 and B12. And finally he took choline, inositol and Krill oil. The latter for its omega 3 to lower the consequent inflammation of an attack. It does not lower uric acid.

What impressed me about this protocol (formula) is that it’s all natural and comprehensive. He increased his odds of success by taking FOUR nutrients (five if we count Rutin) reported by individuals and a few experts, to help lower uric acid. That is the key to controlling gout.

But if you use someone's formula for gout, stay exactly with that.

The other lesson for us, a useful reminder, is he had his gout attack 5 years earlier and assumed his gout had gone away. Many people do. But if you are not correctly watching what you eat and drink, and achieving other things to control it, such as taking the right medicines and nutrients and losing weight if necessary, another attack in the future is just about certain.

He rightly thought two work factors – insufficient hydration and long outside working hours, contributed to the return of gout.



I think I promised in the last edition there would be more on lowering food purines before eating food.

There is a new page called lowering seafood purines. It's really a summary of the not-so-many-studies there have been about lowering the purines in fish. In some cases all the four purines bases are analysed, both the ones that raise uric acid and the two that don’t (or not much).

Main points - In a small number of studies rinsing lowered fish purines by a considerable amount as it did in the minced beef study. Enough to make a 5-10 minutes rinse worthwhile Boiling (stewing) and frying fish were the two top ways of lowering seafood purines by cooking.

The lowering seafood purines page also has a not-well- known gout diet tip, again based on a study, this one from 424 Japanese adults. Be careful of sushi and sashimi. In the study those who ate these, and some other fish, had a high risk for hyperuricemia (high uric acid)


A new page on the website about lowering seafood purines includes one study where fresh sardines (not canned, they have been cooked already) were boiled for 25 minutes and that lowered their nucleic acids (the precursor of purines) by nearly 50%.

Fresh sardines are difficult to find these days but I think sardines are an interesting fish. They are good for gout because of their high levels of omega fats and many other nutrients but bad because of their high amount of purines, so boiling them first seems like a good idea. if you can get them. I guess you can boil canned ones but that wasn't in the study. Should have the same effect though

We recently had the latest news from SEL 212, the new gout drug under development in the United States that will eventually, should it be approved, compete with Krystexxa. It is for chronic gout patients, not an average one. It is now towards the end of its Phase 2 trials with only the phase 3 trials to come before concluding them. Phase 3 begin later this year

SEL-212 is two drugs in one. Its Pegsiticase (Uricase Peg-20) lowers uric acid and its SVP-Rapamycin mitigates the response from the immune system. Whereas Krystexxa (pegloticase) is a form of uricase with no second drug added to mitigate immune system responses.

Results It continued to deliver solid results. Selecta reported 81% of trialists controlled their uric acid below 6.0 mg/dL at week 12. Whereas in a Krystexxa trial at week 16 about half did. Similarly there were fewer gout flares in the SEL-212 trial than in an earlier Krystexxa one.

But there are only 27 trialists so far in the SEL-212 trial to compare which isn't a lot.

Selecta have not reported how much uric acid fell in patients it tested. So we really don't know yet if the results were brilliant or not. Krystexxa lowered uric acid 7.0 mg/dL in the first week in one batch of trialists, an excellent reduction.
