So now you understand why pH should be considered when deciding your gout diet plan.
What's the pH foods best course of action, for gout sufferers?
The pH test strips will tell you where you are on the pH scale. This gives you clues as to whether you should be eating more alkaline effect foods. During a gout attack you can consider cutting back those of your gout treatment foods which are more acidic.
As you get to know pH foods better, you will learn that there are some foods and beverages which are definitely acidic or definitely alkaline. And you will learn that some low purine, low GI (glycemic index), low GL (glycemic load), low calorie, high antioxidant foods i.e. foods which are good from other dietary perspectives, may also be acidic.
This doesn't mean they should be excluded from your gout treatment foods list just because they are acidic. It means merely that pH foods numbers should be used in the context of your overall diet and your current progress.
Click here for the pH of individual foods and drinks. This website also has a list of foods about which there isn’t agreement, in every pH potential foods list, as to the extent to which they are acidic or alkaline. But it will help you understand gout treatment foods better.
In a study in Japan, 26 healthy young female students raised their urine pH by 0.6 on the pH scale, and their uric acid excretion by 37%, by eating a more alkaline diet. In only 5 days. It was a good result, but note blood uric acid as not measured.
You can read the type and amounts of foods they ate in the appendix to the study.
We say more about this study, on this pH and gout page, where there is a link to download the study (courtesy of Nutrition Journal).
How else does a gout sufferer deal with the pH of foods?
One approach would be to avoid those foods about which there isn’t agreement. Or you could say “because there isn’t agreement, they are probably borderline. So I’ll eat fewer.” And you can get other useful ideas from these lists. A simple one would be:
“I like cranberries and gooseberries, they are acidic, my pH is too acidic, therefore I will stop eating cranberries and gooseberries. Then I’ll see if my pH rises from this step. If it does, these are both gout foods to avoid and they are not one of my gout treatment foods.”
A diet which combines purine restriction with pH foods calculations PLUS low calories or low carb weight loss?
Bon appetite? Not likely for most people! Combining low purine foods and high pH foods makes a gout treatment foods diet very restricted. You also may be trying to lose weight on your gout diet.
So drawing up a detailed gout diet plan to take account of the need to lose weight, purine restriction, (to reduce uric acid supply) and pH balance calculations is very complicated and very few people people would stick with it. It might end up being a crash diet which isn’t recommended for gout sufferers. If you’re trying to lose weight use your favourite (favorite) weight loss diet but consider its purines content.
Remember that a low purine diet is only moderately important in reducing uric acid levels. Certainly delete anything high purine from your gout treatment foods list.
Alkaline (ionized) water
Drink water that has been alkalized with alkaline water drops or a water ionizer. A good brand of drops will akalize (alkalise)a glass of water with just five drops and last for months. Alkaline (ionized) is water with excess oxygen in the form of
OH-, not O2. It's described by some as lively and tastier than regular water, but others would not like over-alkalized water.diet. The drops alkalize water, the ionizers produce alkaline water to a pH level that you specify (for example up to pH 9.5 or pH 9.8) and are more convenient to use. In the long run the ionizers are also cheaper. Alkaline water comes out of your ionizer after it has been filtered. (Water ionizers can also produce acidic water, which has its uses).
And alkalized water can be used for cooking as well as drinking. There is also a purified water setting on the device. This is for taking drug medications with purified water if your doctor thinks they should not be taken with alkalized water. Alkaline water is also an antioxidant.
http://www.waterionizer.org offers a free DVD about alkaline water, a free pH saliva test, and a free report comparing alkaline water with other methods of purifying water. Ships to the U.S., Canada, and other countries.
You can also view instructional videos which show you how to install, (not difficult), use and maintain Jupiter ionizers. Most people will not require the services of a plumber to install one.
Drinking alkaline water is much easier than doing complicated calculations about which acidic foods should not be part of your gout treatment foods. Its pH can be set much higher than tap (faucet) water which is about 7.0. Remember that the pH scale is logarithmic and the meaning of that.
Best gout diet plan bet?
Simplify your home remedy for gout diet and make it easier to follow, by using alkalizing agents such as alkaline water, vitamin supplements with minerals and pH dietary supplements specially prepared to boost your pH. Avoid adding complicated pH foods calculations. By all means cut out a few known acidic foods and beverages. Keep testing with the pH test strips. Remember that a higher body pH means that more uric acid is likely to be excreted.
